There is much excitement in the Fifteen Rugby offices ahead of the RGS Newcastle v Durham School fixture on Friday night.
School’s rugby is being showcased on the sort of platform that this great institution of the game deserves, as these two schools travel to Kingston Park, home of the Newcastle Falcons, to take each other on in what is sure to be a fantastic spectacle.
The game starts at 17.30 on Friday night in the 10,200 capacity stadium and is part of a double bill, which includes the Newcastle Falcons against the Doncaster Knights at 20.00.
This is an excellent opportunity for players, supporters, and even those who know little about school rugby.
To be able to play in front of a crowd like this is an occasion that none of these players will forget, for many of them this will be the very pinnacle of their rugby lives. While for their parents, friends and teachers it will be an incredibly proud moment.
For those new to schools rugby, it will be an opportunity to witness just how much skill and talent there is in the school game. This is an opportunity to see some of the stars of the future, indeed for Falcons fans, this is likely to be a game that involves a number of potential future Falcons.
For those of you who, like us, enjoyed rugby when a game for all shapes and sizes was a reality not a catchphrase, school rugby is for you. Where a 9 stone scrum half will chop down a sixteen stone prop as if it is nothing.
Durham go into the game as favourites after defeating rugby giants Barnard Castle 34-19 on Saturday, while RGS were on the wrong side of a 44-3 scoreline against George Watson’s.
Both sides have a strong rugby heritage though, and all form is likely to go out of the window as they take part in this unusually pressurized match. The likely winner will be the side who cope with the unusual surroundings and added crowd size and noise the best.
What is for certain is that this is the stage that school rugby deserves, big crowds, and coverage. The whole of the North East is about to be introduced to the hidden rugby gem that is school rugby. They are going to love it.
