Haileybury edge out Bedford Modern in 60 point thriller

In one of the most exciting games of the season to date, Haileybury beat Bedford Modern 31-29 in a dramatic turnaround.

Haileybury came into the game shot of confidence after a tough defeat to King’s Canterbury last week, while Modern were on a high after a convincing victory at Stamford.

Hailerybury fly half Ed Jinks reports:

The XV came into this week’s fixture eager to improve on last week’s performance. Much like last week we started very slowly and were down by 2 tries in the first 10 minutes.

However, we managed to hold on and went into half time 24-5 down. In the second half we organised our defence better, preventing numerous attacks from modern while creating attacks of our own.

This lead to a very exciting period of rugby, which saw 4 more tries run in from the Haileybury XV. The last of these tries meant that we secured the victory in the very last passage of play and therefore recorded our first win of the season.

Jinks also scored three of the Haileybury try’s in an excellent display from the fly half, while Morrison and Tivey both ran in for a score each.

Haileybury are sure to be buoyed in what is going to be a busy week for them with a game on Tuesday against Felsted followed by Stamford on Saturday.

The resilience and strength of mind shown here against Bedford Modern will prove invaluable for them. To come back from a 19 point deficit at half time shows a tremendous spirit a collective will to win. That they one the game with a try in the final play of the game makes it all the more impressive.

For Bedford Modern it will be a tough loss to take, to lose from a position of such strength is a disheartening experience, and to lose it at the death will leave a bitter taste.

Both sides should be proud though to have played a part in such an exciting and high quality game of rugby.
