The Reigate Grammar School Charity Sevens, sponsored by Norton Rose, takes place on Sunday; Brighton College will be looking to build on their tournament victory at the Bryanston Sevens with another trophy here.
Epsom College took the title last year in an exciting tournament, beating Brighton College 34-12, both sides will certainly be expecting to make a similarly good impression on the Cup competition again this year, with both sides favourite to win their groups.
Keen to get as much rugby played as possible, the organisers have ensured that once again there will be a Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl, meaning that regardless of where a side finishes in the pool, each will have a shot at winning some silverware.
John Fisher won the Plate competition last year but they will be hoping that this year they will be in competing for the Cup instead, they have a tough group with Reed’s, King’s Canterbury and the hosts Reigate Grammar School, but they should be confident of topping the Pool.
Wallington County Grammar won the Shield in 2012 but they are not competing this year, the side that they beat 19-7 in the final, Cranbrook, are though. While Epsom College might be the favourites in Cranbrook’s group, there is certainly no reason why Cranbrook should not be hoping for a spot in the Plate competition, with Dulwich likely to send a weakened side as their 1st XV are playing in the Daily Mail Cup the day before.
Worth were the winners of the Bowl last year but as favourites in Group H this year, they will be disappointed with anything less than a Cup quarter final.
Elsewhere, Tonbridge and Whitgift look like the favourites for Groups F and G, while in Group A SGS Filton are surely the favourites and possibly even the favourites for the whole tournament.
A couple of strong sevens outings last week were then topped off by a huge midweek fifteen-a-side win over Truro College, sealing a semi final spot in the AASE league, filling them with confidence ahead of these Reigate Grammar School Charity Sevens.
