School Sevens – Results & Previews

It has been an exciting midweek of Sevens this week, with The King’s School Worcester once again demonstrating their class with a third tournament win out of four when they took the Solihull sevens, while Whitgift made it two a week with victory at the Hampton Sevens.

Perhaps ominously for the rest, Millfield are now flexing their sevens muscles too after winning a tough Llandovery Sevens tournament.

That third tournaments victory for King’s Worcester must certainly place them as the favourites for the National title at Rosslyn Park in a couple of weeks time though, but they will know only too well that the likes of Millfield, Whitgift and Brighton College are all snapping at their heels.

Millfield, Brighton College and King’s Worcester are all in action again on Sunday, though in three different competitions, Millfield in the West of England Sevens, King’s Worcester at the Mount St Mary’s Sevens and Brighton College in the Worth Sevens.

Each face serious threats though, with Bryanston likely to be in the mix in the West of England, while at Mount St Mary’s Sedbergh will fancy their chances of keeping King’s Worcester out after winning the North of England Sevens last week, King’s Worcester’s only non tournament win.

Over in Worth the likes of Tonbridge and King’s Canterbury will be hoping to keep Brighton quiet, particularly after impressive showings from both at the Reigate Grammar School charity sevens last week.

Hampton School will fancy their chances at the Middlesex Sevens on Sunday, Hampton have endured a tough time of late, losing 19-17 to Whitgift yesterday in the final of their own Sevens tournament and losing 11-5 at the weekend to Dulwich College in the Daily Mail Cup semi final.

They will take heart from those performances though and will rightly be favourites on Sunday, though Bicton and RGS High Wycombe in particular will pose serious threats.

The inaugural Manchester Schools Sevens also takes place this weekend but the groups are yet to be announced, tournament Director Marco Vaghetti preview his tournament here though: http://www.mr7s.com/schools/2013/02/schools-festival-preview/

The Sevens season is certainly shaping up very nicely, and if teams keep on improving and turning out performances of the standard we have seen so far, we could be in for a spectacular week in Rosslyn Park.
