Independent School Lambs all set for Ireland tour

BECOME A PATRON

The Independent School Lambs RFC travel to Ireland on Tuesday as they embark on their annual Easter tour. The squad will play four games during the weeklong tour in what will be a gruelling schedule.

The Lambs draw their squad from Independent Schools across the length and breadth of the country in a challenging system of trial games. Players are nominated by their school coaches before then going through, regional, inter-regional, and then National trials.

Rugby’s true Corinthian spirit is at the heart of all that the Lambs do, and they have a commitment to playing an open and exciting brand of rugby, with enjoyment of the game a more important factor than results, summed up excellently in their club motto; ‘Fast and Free’.

Their tour opens with a game against Leinster U18’s on Wednesday at St Mary’s RFC in Dublin before they take on a Leinster U18 Clubs XV just the following day at Donnybrook Stadium.

The 32 man squad will then have a days rest as they travel to Galway to take on Connacht U18’s on Saturday 6th April. Sunday sees another rest day and a long trip to Ulster, where they will take on Ulster U18’s at Queen’s University on Monday 8th before returning back home the following day.

Ahead of the tour the Lambs have played three fixtures so far, beating he Irish Exiles U18 and Crawshay’s Welsh XV before suffering a tough defeat to the Boy’s Club of Wales a couple of weeks ago.

With the inclement weather conditions that are currently sweeping across the UK and Ireland, one of the major challenges for the Lambs will be how they react to what will likely be some tough playing surfaces. Having been treated to the magnificent artificial surface at Maidenhead RFC for their games so far, adapting to a trickier surface will be key.

Of course for many of the players though a week at the Rosslyn Park Sevens last week will have prepared them for that after harsh weather conditions took their toll on the prestigious tournaments pitches.

The 32 man squad looks to be a strong one, the Lambs core group of regular starters, captian Iain Billington, Charlie Banks, Angus Smith, Josh Piertse, Mike Peek and Elliot Croft all tour, whilst newcomer Andrew Hamilton of Blundell’s School will make his Lambs debut at hooker during the course of the tour.

Playing for the Lambs is one of the highest honours in schoolboy rugby, and with their commitment to playing exciting rugby and to upholding the values at the core of Rugby Union they are one the great adverts for the game, if you find yourself in Ireland next week, it will be worth your while to pop along and see them.
