Barbarians ready to take on England

BECOME A PATRON

The Barbarians have announced their squad to face England at Twickenham on Sunday, where former England captain Mike Tindall will lead them.

England Saxons and London Wasps’ Elliot Daly will start at full back, Daly missed out on selection for the England tour of South America this June but will be hoping to impress Stuart Lancaster lest any injuries should hit the squad.

The Wasps man is one of two uncapped players in the squad, his club teammate Sam Jones is the other.

Following the match the Barbarians will fly to Hong Kong where they will be playing the British and Irish Lions on the 1st June. As such, the likes of Wales’ James Hook and Scotland’s Jim Hamilton will be keen to impress after just missing out on the Lions tour.

Equally keen to impress ahead of the Hong Kong fixture will be Rowan Varty. Varty is the Hong Kong Sevens captain and the first player from the island to represent the Barbarians.

Former British and Irish Lions Matthew Rees and Dwayne Peel are also starting at Twickenham with Schalk Brits and Dimitri Yachvili waiting in the wings, Yachvili’s star Biarritz teammates Takudzwa Ngwenya and Imanol Harinordoquy also start.

The match is also a final international goodbye for Italian prop Andrea Lo Cicero, Lo Cicero retired from Italian duty at the end of the Six Nations and is joined on the other side of the scrum by relative newcomer to the rugby world James Johnston, who moves to Saracens this summer.

The London Wasps contingent of Daly and Jones is further augmented by second row Marco Wentzel and back row forward Jonathan Poff, Italian international Alessandro Zanni joins Poff in the back row.

England will name their side on Friday morning with a number of players expected to make the first senior appearance, potentially including RPA Players Player and Young Player of the Year, Christian Wade.
