BECOME A PATRON

It has been another excellent midweek on the school rugby scene with some cracking matches in both the NatWest Cup and the Daily Mail Trophy, setting things up for another cracking weekend; here we round up all of the midweek action.

Tuesday

On Tuesday we travelled to Bedford in the glorious Indian Summer weather where we were treated to an excellent display from the home side as they defeated Harrow 36-17. It has been a topsy turvy season so far for Bedford but if they continue to perform as they did on Tuesday then they will be in for a highly successful year.

Tuesday also saw Clifton College gain another excellent victory; they beat Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 37-6 to brilliantly back up their outstanding victory against Bryanston at the weekend.

Wednesday

With plenty of fixtures to choose from it was hard to decide which to watch live on Wednesday but we selected Stowe v Solihull, and what a decision it turned out to be.

Solihull won 25-22 but that only tells half the story, they trailed 22-6 at half time but an astute tactical switch and nineteen unanswered points saw them brilliantly turn the game around. It was a fantastic game to witness.

There were also some big fixtures in the NatWest Cup on Wednesday but we will look into them later on in our round up, outside of the cup though there were another couple of crackers; Magdalen College sneaked a 19-17 victory away at the much fancied Abingdon while Sir Thomas Rich’s backed up their superb weekend victory with a 38-12 victory against RGS Worcester.

Truro School faced a tough local derby against AASE opposition Truro College. The school lost 29-13 but given the gulf between the sides preparation it was a solid result for the school and will give them much hope of repeating last years Schools Cup heroics.

Thursday

On Thursday we travelled to Radley to watch two of the most prestigious schools in the country in action as Radley College played hosts to Eton College. It was a spectacular occasion with a bumper crowd and the game more than matched the fanatical crowd for intensity.

Radley showed great courage and determination to overcome an unbelievably powerful Eton driving maul, which provided perfect front foot ball, to secure a 22-10 victory.

While we were in Radley KES Bath had travelled to Monkton Combe where they showed their class to win 36-14.

NatWest Cup

Two games particularly stood out in the NatWest Cup this week – Hurstpierpoint v Worth and Lymm High v St Ambrose College.

Worth have been in fine form this season and it showed as they won 21-19 at Hurstpierpoint to set up a third round fixture against Seaford who beat Christ College 14-0.

It was a close game at Lymm too where the hosts beat St Ambrose Colelge 22-20. Also significantly winning in the NatWest Cup this week were Bishop’s Stortford College, Nottingham High School and Caterham School among others.
