Midweek Round Up – Seven progress in NatWest Cup

Seven schools added their names to the fourth round of the NatWest Cup after third round victories this midweek.

They join Norwich School, King Edward VI Five Ways School, Whitgift, Stowe, and Plymouth College as the competition starts to take shape.

Two former winners, Oakham and Bradford Grammar School were among the seven to progress, Oakham beat Trent 14-10 while Bradford beat Ilkley Grammar School 67-0.

Chew Valley and Cockethorpe also enjoyed strong wins to progress; they beat Sexeys and King Alfred’s 37-0 and 36-0 respectively.

Woodhouse Grove beat Crosley Heath 31-22 to become the first side in North B to reach the fourth round. Woodhouse Grove have the potential to go along way this year but will be feeling that they should be more commanding in the early rounds. The best sides come alive the deeper into the tournament they get though.

King’s Grantham beat Welbeck 17-7, Midlands B has really begun to take shape, a quarter of the fourth round participants have already been decided.

Finally, Owen Farrell’s old school, St George’s Harpenden, beat Mill Hill 10-7. They seem likely to face St Benedict’s in the next round.

Outside of the cup, Yarm were beaten by Silcoates 27-12, condemning last years Vase winners to a third defeat of the season.

Sedbergh showed their class once again this season, they beat the excellent King’s Macclesfield 36-18. Sedbergh therefore remain unbeaten so far this year and look increasingly determined to show that it was only illness and weather that held them back last year.

It was a closer run thing than it looks though, King’s actually led with ten minutes left but a blitz of late Sedbergh tries completely changed the outcome of the game and left reporters in the North waxing lyrical about the entertainment of this current Sedbergh side.
