Sensational Day of NatWest Cup Action

What a day of NatWest Cup action this has been, with several games going down to the wire!

Hampton and Warwick’s progressions via draws against St Benedict’s and Solihull are surely the most dramatic of all. Hampton progressed as the away side after a 7-7 draw, while Warwick’s West Midlands derby ended 31-31, with Warwick progressing on tries scored.

We were down at Campion, winners in 2001, where things were almost as dramatic as those two games. Campion led 7-3 at half time before a converted try saw St Joseph’s College, who won their highly coveted Festival a month ago, take the lead in the second half.

However with just minutes remaining Campion scored a converted try from a driving maul to give them a 14-10 lead that they just managed to cling onto to progress to Round 6.

With the results that are in so far we have four sections of the draw that have got their fifth round games done and dusted, North A, Midlands A, South East A, and South West B.

In North A Durham won the North East derby, beating RGS Newcastle 22-5, while Grammar School at Leeds showed their class by beating Stockport Grammar 16-5.

Cup legends Barnard Castle went out with a point to prove against Bradford Grammar School, winning 24-7, while dark horses Stonyhurst won 26-10 against RGS Lancaster.

In South West B Marlborough and RGS High Wycombe beat Portsmouth Grammar and Reading Blue Coat respectively to set up a sixth round tie against each other, while in the bottom half of the draw Sir Thomas Rich’s made the statement of the competition by beating Cup legends Colston’s 61-0.

They will play Bicton College who are quietly making their way through the tournament, they beat King’s College Taunton 24-10 and are definitely a side to keep an eye on.

Elsewhere, the holders Dulwich won 41-32 against Felsted, holding off a late charge, while one of the big favourites, Whitgift, beat Seaford 25-9. They will face Hampton after that thriller against St Benedict’s, while in the bottom half of London & South East A Dartford Grammar School are the side to face Campion after beating Skinners’.

The surprise of the day was perhaps The Perse’s 34-14 win over Oakham, though given that they nearly beat St Joseph’s earlier in the year perhaps it should not be so surprising. They will certainly be eyeing up a quarter final spot now.

Trinity School beat Eastbourne College 33-10, a marvelous result against an in form side, while Stowe were also in fine form, beating St Peter’s Gloucester 26-12.

There were three results yesterday, with Stamford beating Uppingham 14-12, Bloxham winning 27-22 against Bishop’s Stortford College, and Lymm High School impressively beating Audenshaw 48-5.

Bloxham and Stamford are both in Midlands A, and the full 6th round schedule in theat section was decided after Bedford Modern beat Saffron Walden 55-14 on Thursday to set up a tie with Stamford.

Finally, Richard Huish were in action today against Millfield, where they magnificently won 17-12 as they caught up on their 4th round fixture. Huish now play Beechen Cliff in the 5th round.
