In a break from the season’s pattern we begin our review of the weekend’s action with a game from outside of our Daily Mail Trophy Competition.
That is because this weekend Woodhouse Grove sealed the Daily Mail Trophy with a 38-7 bonus point victory over Kirkham Grammar School.
Only Millfield, Sedbergh, and Wellington could realistically overhaul Woodhouse and each did their bit, Millfield beat Monmouth 23-21, Sedbergh beat Barnard Castle 48-0, and Wellington edged past St Paul’s 15-14.
However in order to stay in the hunt they all required Woodhouse Grove to drop points, but the Yorkshire based school collected the necessary five points required to seal the inaugural Daily Mail Trophy title. A superb achievement from a fantastic side.
Competition
Our four featured Daily Mail Trophy Competition games threw up some outstanding results and thrilling games.
Oakham just nicked the Rutland derby for the second year in a row. Winning 11-10 away against Uppingham. Oakham have now won that brilliant derby for four years in a row, a bitter pill for their local rivals to swallow.
Dulwich College continued their outstanding run of from with a 20-12 win over Tonbridge, who had previously only lost once all season, to the unbeaten Epsom College.
Marlborough College and Stowe played out an absolutely thrilling contest where Marlborough ran out as the narrow winners, 33-29, confirming that they are a side that is really firing now after their early season troubles.
Our final competition games was Bromsgrove v Cheltenham. Both sides have been playing some great rugby this season but Bromsgrove were the side who came out on top, securing a superb 31-18 victory.
Standout Results
Eton once again showed their ability to raise their game against tough opposition, beating John Fisher 35-26, a quite brilliant result.
Abingdon really turned on the style on Saturday, they were rampant as they strolled to a 49-12 victory over their local rivals St Edward’s Oxford.
RGS High Wycombe and Stamford both showed their class with outstaning victories over St Benedict’s and St Albans repectively. RGS’ 34-7 win over St Benedict’s was particularly impressive.
Stonyhurst put on a show with a 40-10 victory over King’s Macclesfield, a quite stunning result to cap a fine season, while Harrow again demonstrated their quality with a 31-21 victory over Radley.
Perhaps the most thrilling result of the weekend though was Rugby’s 27-26 victory over Bedford. Bedford were the favourites but Rugby performed excellently to edge this thrilling game by a point.
