Strong draw named for the Bryanston 7s

The draw for the 2014 Bryanston 7s has been made and it includes some of the most traditionally strong 7s sides in the country.

The likes of Millfield, Hampton, Brighton College, and Filton College will join Bryanston, with each having strong ambitions for the ultimate 7s goal, the Rosslyn Park National School 7s.

They are not alone though, in King’s College Taunton, Bristol Grammar, KES Bath, Abingdon, Portsmouth Grammar School, and Truro School there is strength across the board, and that is without even mentioning the six other sides in the competition, including a slightly unknown entity in Canadian side GP Vanier Secondary School.

Last year Brighton College won the tournament, beating King’s College Taunton 19-5 in the final, while in the Plate competition a 24-19 victory over Bicton College was enough for Portsmouth Grammar School to take the trophy.

This year the competition takes place on the 16th March, just a week and a half before Rosslyn Park, so it is expected to be a very good indicator of form ahead of that national gathering.

Bryanston face a pretty tough draw as they must face SGS Filton in their group as well as Abingdon, King Edward VI Southampton, and GP Vanier. In Group B things hardly get less competitive, with Truro, Portsmouth Grammar and King’s College Taunton all vying with Millfield for the honours there.

Group C Taunton School, Bristol Grammar School and Blundell’s all compete with Hampton. Hampton will be favourites for this one, however should they be involved in the NatWest Cup semi finals the weekend before and be successful there, their minds could be focussed on an even greater task.

In Group D Brighton College, Canford, KES Bath, and King’s Bruton will all fight it out in what should be a well-matched pool.
