Ampleforth College 7s draw announced – big names across every pool

The draw for the Ampleforth College 7s leg of the HMC North Super 7s Series has been announced, and as ever in the Super 7s Series, the lineup is very strong indeed.

The competition takes place on Wednesday the 12th February from midday. The tournament has been cancelled for the past two years due to bad weather, leaving Sedbergh as the ‘reigning’ champions, having won in back in 2011.

The competition is divided into four groups of four, with the top two in each group competing for the Cup, and the bottom two going on to compete for the Plate trophy.

Hosts Ampleforth head up Group A alongside Grammar School at Leeds, Yarm, and the Scottish side Loretto. In Group B Woodhouse Grove will be the favourites after their Daily Mail Trophy exploits and last season’s trip to the final at Rosslyn Park. They a grouped with St Peter’s York, Pocklington, and Hymers College, who host their own leg of the Super 7s series towards the end of March.

Group C looks highly competitive, with Barnard Castle, Kirkham Grammar School, Bradford Grammar School, and Mount St Mary’s all jostling for position. If fifteen-a-side form is anything to go by then this should be a very close run group.

Group D hosts the side who must surely be considered favourites after lifting the Rosslyn Park 7s trophy last year, Sedbergh. They are joined by RGS Newcastle, QEGS Wakefield, and Silcoates in what should be yet another incredibly competitive group in this very strong competition draw.

The Super 7s Series has such a wealth of strong teams included throughout the series that it has to be considered as one of the best indicators of form ahead of the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s at the end of the term, particularly when considering that both of last year’s finalists were from the Super 7s series.

Who do you think will win at Ampleforth, and will they go on to win at Rosslyn Park? Let us know via @FifteenRugbyXV or through the comment box below.
