Saints & Gloucester U18s ready for U18 Premiership showdown

Northampton Saints and Gloucester U18s face off this evening in a battle for top spot in the Northern Conference of the U18 Premiership Academy League.

Leicester Tigers currently sit at the top of the conference following their heavy victory over Newcastle Falcons on Saturday. Saints and Gloucester were scheduled to play this effective play off game on Saturday too, however the current weather rendered the pitch unplayable and the game postponed to today at Daventry RFC.

That Tigers result will be irrelevant for these sides though as the winner of tonight’s fixture will secure top spot in the Northern Conference.

However this is still a slim chance that Leicester could take the league if the two sides were to draw in tonight’s 7pm kick off.

It is set to be a huge encounter, Northampton Saints have collected more try scoring bonus points than any other side, while Gloucester are one of only two unbeaten teams in the entire U18 League system, the other being Exeter Chiefs in the Southern Conference – the side that the winner will face in the Championship at Allianz Park on Monday.

Indeed had Gloucester had the try scoring prowess of Northampton then the Cherry & Whites would be top of the league and looking in a very strong position, however as the only side ever to have beaten the Leicester Tigers U18s since this competition was introduced then they will feel highly confident.

Northampton Saints cam within just a couple of points of doing so themselves though, picking up two bonus points in the process. This game is incredibly tight.

One way or another, given the success of Exeter in the Southern Conference, and their fantastic Academy record, the U18 Premiership final on Monday is going to be a fantastic match up – no matter who wins this evening.
