School 7s ready to explode into life with the Hampton 7s

BECOME A PATRON

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the first big school 7s tournament of the season gets underway tomorrow – the Hampton School U18 Founders Day 7s.

With the weather finally beginning to subside and the pitches beginning to show signs of drying out, we can finally see some of the top 7s schools and players take to the field.

It has been a trying time with big competitions such as the Shiplake 7s, South Coast 7s, and a couple of the North HMC Super 7s series tournaments all being cancelled, among others, but with a month to go until the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s there is still plenty of time for teams to get some 7s game time under their wings.

The Hampton School U18 Founders Day 7s will be an outstanding opening to what will hopefully now be a jam packed schedule though, particularly as this season it has been expanded from ten to twelve schools for its seventeenth edition.

The sides have been split into two pools of six, with the winner of each pool competing in the final and the runners up in the Plate final.

The hosts, Hampton, reached the final last year but were beaten by Whitgift 19-17. Those two are therefore kept apart this year, with Hampton in Group A as hosts and Whitgift in Group B as holders. The Plate holders, Cranleigh, join Hampton in Group A, while the side they beat 28-7 in that final, Campion are in Group B with Whitgift.

The Hampton School 7s should be a superb day, particularly as eight of the twelve sides involved will be in action again on Sunday at the Norton Rose, Reigate Grammar School Charity 7s, which was also won by Whitgift last year, adding extra spice to Hampton’s comeptition.

Whitgift beat Brighton College in that Reigate final last year, and Brighton, like Whtigift and Hampton, are involved in both tournaments again this year. They join Hampton and Cranleigh in Group A alongside RGS Guildford and KCS Wimbledon, who both also travel to Reigate, and St Benedict’s.

In Group B Tiffin join Campion and Whitgift, while St Joseph’s College, Wimbledon College, and John Fisher also compete before making the trip to Reigate on Sunday.

Who do you think will win the Hampton 7s, and how do you rate the chances of those involved when it comes to the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s? Let us know via the comment box below or via @FifteenRugbyXV
