Bedford School won the 2014 Oakham School 7s this weekend amidst a very strong field from around the region.
Bedford beat an excellent Stowe side 45-5 in the final, a quite sensational result that just served to underline the quality of this Bedford team, who went through the entire day undefeated to retain the title that they won last year with a 20-14 defeat of St Joseph’s College.
They faced their opposition from last year’s final in the semi final this year, St Joseph’s narrowed the gap a little after winning Group A but Bedford still won 17-12.
Last year Uppingham School won the Plate competition, however this year they were in the main Cup after topping Group C. They lost out 12-17 to Stowe in the semi final, however the Rutland side can still take heart and will feel that this result bodes well for Rosslyn Park.
Their great Rutland rivals, and hosts, Oakham School, did not have the day they were hoping for. They finished bottom of Group A and had to make an early exit, a great shame for them and the tournament – all 7s tournaments benefit from a strong performance by the home side.
Denston College won the Plate competition; they just managed to sneak past The Perse in the semi, 26-24, before beating Bedford Modern School 29-10 in the final.
It is Bedford who will be coming back from Oakham singing, just winning would have been good enough but to have retained their title and posted such a huge score against Stowe in the final will leave them feeling very confident for the competition ahead, and with several sides moving from the Rosslyn Park Festival to the Open, Bedford might just fancy their chances of picking up some silverware in the Festival.
