Tonbridge, Bedford, and Brighton College the favourites for Sunday’s Worth 7s

BECOME A PATRON

With the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s drawing ever nearer, Sunday’s Worth 7s should prove very revealing indeed.

Big names will flock to the West Sussex based school for what looks set to be an incredibly competitive tournament. Three major 7s tournament winners all feature, Reigate Charity 7s winners Tonbridge, Hampton 7s winners Brighton College, and Oakham 7s winners Bedford.

Those three sides are all kept apart at the group stage, which ought to mean that there will be some mouth watering knockout ties. With Tonbridge and Bedford also both remaining in the Festival draw at Rosslyn Park, this will also be a handy chance to judge their relative form heading into the national competition.

The main protagonists were much the same last year, as Tonbridge beat Brighton College 17-12 in final, on the way to their run to the final at Rosslyn Park later that term.

As such, Tonbridge are in Group A, alongside Eltham College, Hurstpierpoint, St George’s Weybridge, and the hosts of their 7s triumph a few weeks ago, Reigate Grammar School.

2013’s runners up, Brighton College, are in Group C. They are joined their local rivals, Seaford College, as well as St John’s Leatherhead, Skinners’, and the renowned and much respected Sherborne.

Sunday’s hosts, Worth, are drawn in Group B, and will have high hopes of mounting to top that group. They are joined by Wimbledon College, The Oratory, Caterham, and Eastbourne College.

Bedford, meanwhile, are in Group D where both the winners and runners up of last year’s plate competition, Reed’s and KCS Wimbledon respectively, will pose a strong threat, as will City of London Freemen’s, while Hampton will be fielding a 2nd VII in the Group as their first string will be at the Bryanston 7s.

It seems a slightly odd allocation as part of the draw of the Worth 7s is that this year there is also a 2nd VII tournament. However Christ’s Hospital’s 1st VII find themselves there and may be hoping for an exchange with Hampton.

That too should be a good competition though, it is split into two groups with Christ’s Hospital in Group 1 along with Brighton College, Caterham, and KCS Wimbledon’s second strings, while in Group 2 Hurstpierpoint, Sherborne, The Oratory, and Worth’s second strings will vie to reach the knockout stages.

The main draw is where the bulk of the attention will be though, and it is certainly expected to be an intriguing contest. Bedford, Brighton, and Tonbridge might be the favourites but there are plenty of other who are capable of an upset. For the sake of their national hopes, the main protagonists will be hoping not.
