Whitgift star Henry Cheeseman has been selected for the England Sevens team to play in the opening round of the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Sevens Series in Lyon this weekend.
The Harlequins Academy player has been starring for the England Injured Players Fund 7s side in the GB7s Series over the last few weeks has been rewarded with a call up to the senior England side for the Lyon tournament.
In truth, the call up comes as no surprise – though of course how early it has come for him is very impressive. Cheeseman has been a true star of the school 7s (and 15s) circuit for a few years now and featured for Harlequins in the World Club 7s last year and has really kicked on this season, become one of the stars of the Elite 7s circuit.
It has long been expected that the Whitgift man would represent England 7s, but to do so as a schoolboy is highly impressive. Cheeseman has represented England U18 in fifteen-a-side this season, and he is joined by a fellow England U18 teammate, Cameron Cowell, in the England 7s squad.
Cowell, like Cheeseman, is still at school and has been playing for the England IPF side. He is currently at St Paul’s Catholic College, the AASE side for the London Irish Academy and the exciting back three player will also be relishing this opportunity to play alongside seasoned England 7s internationals like Chris Cracknell and Christian Lewis-Pratt.
Speaking about the two youngsters’ inclusion, England 7s Head Coach Simon Amor said:
“These FIRA tournaments also give us an opportunity to look down the pathway at some of the young guys coming through as we work closely with the Premiership Academies.â€
“Cameron Cowell and Henry Cheeseman are both still in education and have shown their potential at age grade level and impressed recently in our England IPF development team at the GB 7s series.â€
“Exposing them to top level sevens in a European competition will be great for their development. I am delighted to be working with the Premiership Academies to develop young players with real potential for the XVs game.”
In Cheeseman and Cowell’s absence the England IPF 7s side head into the final round of the GB7s series with a chance of overall victory in the series, though the Samurai Barracudas still lead the way, and with Carlin Isles in their ranks they are the favourites to win their second series in a row.
Cheeseman and Cowell’s England U18 teammate, Giggleswick’s Taylor Prell, will be in action in the Colwyn Bay leg of the series this weekend, he represents the Wailers.
For Cowell and Cheeseman though, the focus will firmly be on Lyon and the England 7s – a superb achievement for the two schoolboys.
