Midweek Schools Rugby – Preview & Predictions

BECOME A PATRON

There is a bumper midweek of schools rugby ahead, with at least two dozen major games going ahead.

There are games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with NatWest Cup action, some spectacular evening kick offs, and the next leg of Craighouse’s dominant tour of the England.

They play Eastbourne College on Tuesday, with Eastbourne looking to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Sutton Valence.

At the same time Harrow School will be hosting Bedford. Traditionally a very even contest, this year Bedford look to be strong favourites but midweek away travel can often be tricky so this will be a good game to keep an eye on.

The big game of the day though is the Ryan Bresnahan Memorial match between Clifton College and Kingswood and Clifton RFC. The 19.30 kick off should make it a spectacular event.

Tuesday also sees NatWest Cup action between Welbeck and Leicester Grammar School.

Wednesday is a busy day with some brilliant looking fixtures. Perhaps the standout fixture is between Solihull and Stowe, two of the best sides around last year and they are looking very solid again this year – with Stowe in particular attracting many positive comments.

Just down the road, RGS Worcester will be hosting Sir Thomas Rich’s for what should be another good game between two good sides, while over in Oxfordshire Abingdon will want to make a real statement against Magdalen College.

Among the various other fixtures is another exciting looking evening fixture. This one is at Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which many readers will know from the Greene King IPA 7s, with Culford School hosting St Joseph’s College, who will be looking to continue their fine form ahead of their Festival in mid-October.

On Thursday there is more NatWest Cup action as well as King’s Canterbury, KES Bath, and Canford all in action, among others.

The big two games of the day though are Eton College v Radley College, and Marlborough College v St Edward’s.

Fifteen Rugby visited Tonbridge on Saturday to watch them face Eton, Eton lost narrowly but impressed, while Radley beat St Paul’s, making Thursday an exciting looking fixture.

Marlborough lost relatively heavily to Wellington College at the weekend, however that does not quite tell the story. There was actually only a two point difference at half time and by all accounts Marlborough really made Wellington work. St Edward’s got back to wining ways against Uppingham after a shaky start to the season, so they will be eager to build on that promise.

All in all it should be a great midweek of schools rugby!
