The quarter final draw for the Schools Champions Trophy was decided at Twickenham Stadium today, with great tension and excitement streaming through from social media channels.
First out of the hat (bowl) were Millfield, 16-14 winners of that epic last 16 tie against Tonbridge. They were drawn against Eton College, who must again make a long away trip following their 39-12 away victory in the last round against the Daily Mail Trophy holders, Woodhouse Grove.
Next up were Barnard Caste, 42-0 victors over Reading Blue Coat in the previous round, and one of the most prestigious rugby schools in the country. Coming out of the draw first will have been a huge boost for them; another long away trip would not have been ideal. As it was, it is their opposition who must do the travelling, Marlborough College, fresh from their 15-11 last 16 victory over Eltham College.
Up next were Oakham School. They fought back brilliantly to beat Bradford Grammar School 22-17 in the previous round and another home tie will sit well with them. What will be less enticing for Oakham is the opposition, Epsom College, one of the favourites to win the competition and a formidable side who won their last 16 tie against Blundell’s 40-7.
That left RGS Guildford and Grammar School at Leeds still in the pot, but who would be at home remained to be seen, either way a long trip was on the cards.
RGS Guildford came out first, meaning that the 41-0 victors over Eastbourne College would host Grammar School at Leeds. GSAL have already shown their ability to travel though, beating a good Bedford side 13-10 away from home in the last round.
There still remained the issue of which game would be streamed live. Millfield v Tonbridge had been such a success that the RFU were determined to get a game streamed in this round too.
Game three was the lucky game, Oakham v Epsom College. One of the great rugby schools of the Schools Cup era against Epsom College, unbeaten at both 1st XV and Colts level last year, and looking formidable again this season.
It looks like a brilliant quarter final draw, with eight strong teams and a good group of potential winners. The geographical spread looks excellent too – fulfilling the aim of the tournament – none of the quarter-final fixtures are games that would ordinarily be on the schedule, making each and every one even more fascinating – the race to Allianz Park continues!
The only question is – who will win? Let us know your answers via @FifteenRugbyXV or through the comment box below!
