AASE shake up in round 5

Round 5 in the AASE Leagues was the week that everything got shaken up, everything that is bar the near certainty of another Hartpury college win.

Two sides win just one previous win to their name hit fifty points, the Southern Conference had a real shake up – just two bonus point wins now separate first from fifth.

It is there that we start then, the big game in the South was St Paul’s v Truro. At the start of the day those two, plus Filton, were all tightly bound at the top, each with three wins from four games.

St Paul’s were favourites, by virtue of home advantage more than anything else but Truro were in determined mood and managed to secure an excellent 21-16 victory to send them two points clear at the top of the table.

Filton had an opportunity therefore to secure second spot outright, indeed a bonus point win would have seen them level on points at the top, however they fell to Bicton College, who put in a sterling effort to win 27-19, inflicting a second defeat on the road for Filton, and moving Bicton just three points shy of their visitors.

At the foot of the table came one of the most extraordinary results, Henley have been struggling and Ivybridge were definitely the favourites, however what nobody could have expected was for Ivybridge to hit fifty as they strolled to a 55-5 victory.

Over in the North the focus was all on the game between the only two remaining unbeaten sides in the entire AASE set up, Hartpury and Oaklands. Hartpury were expected to finish the day as the only unbeaten side though, and so it proved as they blasted past Oaklands, securing an impressive 43-3 victory – can anyone stop them?

Then came two shocks, the first as shock not so much for the result, but for the nature of it as Myerscough thrashed Moulton College 57-0, brining them within a point of Worcester 6th form College in third place.

Their narrowing of that gap was assisted my Worcester, who have looked impressive this season, surprisingly falling to a 34-14 defeat to Gosforth Academy, the Newcastle AASE side’s first victory of the season, and enough to send them four points clear of Moulton at the foot of the table.
