Teams jostle for position in final round of AASE league – AASE Round 10 Preview & Predictions

The final round of the AASE league stage takes place tomorrow, and with a new knockout format, there is plenty to play for.

This year the bowel is abolished, with just a Cup and a Plate in the knockout stage. The top three teams from each conference will qualify for the Cup, with the bottom three from each competing in the Plate.

Finishing in the top three is not the end though; the jostling for final positions will be vital as it will determine opposition in the knockout stages. Second place in the North will play 3rd place in the South in a ‘quarter-final’, with the winner facing the winner of the Southern conference in the semi final.

On the other side 2nd in the South will play 3rd in the North, with the winner playing 1st in the North. The winners of the two semi finals then meet in the Cup final.

In the Plate the same format is replicated, with 4th in each conference going straight to the semi finals, and 5th in the South play 6th in the North and vice-versa in their ‘quarter-finals’.

All of which makes Wednesday’s final round vital. In the Northern Conference Hartpury College are guaranteed top spot and Oaklands College are guaranteed second. However third place remains up for grabs, though it would be highly surprising if it were to fall to anyone other than Myerscough College.

A win at bottom of the table Gosforth Academy would guarantee Myerscough third place, though even if the are defeated they are likely to be safe as their closest challengers, Worcester 6th form College need a bonus point win to surpass them and their remaining fixture is away at the unbeaten Hartpury College.

There is an outside chance that Moulton College could seize third place but that would require both Myerscough and Worcester to lose, while Moulton would have to win at home against second place Oaklands, who have only lost to Hartpury. Moulton’s chance of progression exists because they have a second game left to play as their postponed fixture against Gosforth takes place a week on Friday.

In the Southern Conference the top three is decided but the places within it are still very much up for grabs.

Filton College v Truro College is the key fixture here, they are both level on points in second and third respectively, nine points behind St Paul’s Catholic College in first place. A win for St Paul’s over second bottom Henley College would secure them top spot, but they could still secure top even if they lost, a Filton win over Truro College would give St Paul’s 1st place.

That is because Truro have a game in hand, they play their postponed fixture against bottom of the table Ivybridge next Wednesday, a game they will expect to win.

The bottom half is similarly open to change. Bicton currently sit in 4th, but a loss against Ivybridge could see things all change around. Henley College could grab fourth but that would require an unlikely victory away at St Paul’s.

It looks set to be a tense final round of AASE fixtures!
