Final round of AASE league leaves room for intrigue – Hartpury & St Paul’s top

BECOME A PATRON

The final round of the AASE league took place yesterday, with five of the six Cup play off places being decided, while the Plate competition remains uncertain with two postponed games left to be played.

In the North Hartpury, who already had top spot secured, completed an extraordinary unbeaten league season, beating Worcester 6th form College 68-7, meaning that from a maximum possible 50 league points, Hartpury College have secured 49, incredible stuff.

It also confirmed that Worcester could not finish in the top 3 and so will not compete in the Cup. One side who could yet sneak into the Cup are Moulton College. At the start of play they were nine points adrift of third, with a tough fixture against Oaklands College ahead of them, Oaklands had only lost to Hartpury so far.

Oaklands were already guaranteed second place though and perhaps that left them vulnerable as Moulton secured a 24-20 bonus point victory, meaning that if they can beat Gosforth next week in their rearranged fixture, they will finish third.

They will require a bonus point over Gosforth though as Myerscough have a far greater points difference so Moulton must secure more league points that the North West side.

Myerscough could have avoided the nervous wait though, they fell to a surprising defeat away at Gosforth Academy, 29-13, the saving race for them might be that Gosforth could well be buoyed enough by that victory to secure a second in a row against Moulton next week. Third place lies in the Newcastle Falcons AASE side’s hands, while the winner of the game is at least secured 4th place, and even a draw would see Moulton in 4th.

In the South a 29-7 win for St Paul’s Catholic College over Henley College saw them secure top spot in the league ahead of Truro College. Truro themselves have secured second though after an excellent 22-8 away win over Filton College, who finish third.

Those three were all secure in their places in the top three before the final round though, the only variable was where they might finish, it was therefore a similar situation in the bottom half of the table.

Bicton College firmed up fourth place and a direct route to the Plate semi final after a brilliant 42-21 victory over Ivybridge, leaving Ivybridge bottom of the table. However Ivybridge have a game in hand against a Truro College side with nothing to play for next week, which could lift them above Henley College in fifth.
