School Rugby Weekend Roundup – Wellington College seal Daily Mail Trophy

It was the final weekend of the season for many schools, and for many players it was their last ever game in their School 1st XV colours.

With that in mind, it was a real shame that for the first time all season a heavy frost hit overnight, rendering a number of pitches around the country unplayable.

Nevertheless, there was plenty of rugby on show on Saturday afternoon, including nine of the ten fixtures previewed by us ahead of the weekend.

Daily Mail Trophy Prediction Competition

Woodhouse Grove v Hymers College was unfortunately cancelled due to a frozen pitch but the remaining four matches in our prediction competition went ahead, and where else to start but Tonbridge v Wellington College.

Wellington won 22-18, sealing the 2014 Daily Mail Trophy title in the process. After some quibbling last year over Woodhouse Grove’s title winning credentials, surely nobody can argue with Wellington College’s challenge this year?

Wellington have picked up 12 wins from their 14 games, including victories over Epsom College and Millfield. Their only blemishes have been a truly thrilling last minute 37-34 defeat to Sedbergh, who look set to finish second in the table, and a draw with triple Schools Cup champions Dulwich College.

Dulwich lost at home to Epsom College, 34-3, having rested several players following their midweek Schools Cup victory over John Fisher. For Epsom it rounds off their season in style.

Hampton have been on the up ever since half term and proved so again with a brilliant 20-13 away win over Brighton College, while rounding off our Prediction Competition fixtures was Clifton College v Cheltenham College.

Clifton picked up the victory there, 8-7, having been 7-0 down at the break, completing another excellent season for the South West side.

Five Previewed Fixtures

The big game here was Llandovery College v Sedbergh. Sedbergh were coming in high on confidence having beaten Millfield in midweek, and after Llandovery lost to Millfield a few weeks ago, they really will have fancied their chances. However they found Llandovery in magical form, and the home side sped to a 41-20 victory over their Cumbrian visitors.

Another titanic tussle was Stowe v Bedford. Both play some great rugby and it was expected to be a good game, with Stowe marginal favourites. Bedford stung their hosts though, winning 19-11 to finish their season in style.

It was stylish stuff for RGS Newcastle too, who beat QEGS Wakefield 35-7, and it was a similar story for Oundle, who rounded off a brilliant second half of term with a sublime 33-3 victory over Rugby.

Abingdon have also been in superb form this season and were desperate to finish on the high they deserved after falling to defeat to Bedford last week. They certainly did that, beating Marlborough College 16-13.

Around the Grounds

Elsewhere there were some impressive results, Pocklington won the Dallaglio/Webber Cup against Ampleforth 18-14, while Solihull beat near rivals Adams Grammar School 32-12.

Bedford Modern were once again just sublime, beating Bishop’s Stortford High School 76-0.

Canford bagged their first victory over Bryanston in 16 years, but they were made to sweat for it, just closing the game out at 10-9. It was a different story for Barnard Castle, they saw off Dame Allan’s with an impressive 66-0 scoreline.

Bromsgrove were similarly impressive, beating KES Birmingham 51-7, they will be more than ready for their NatWest Cup round 6 game. Stamford could be their opponents if they win that, they won their 5th round game today against Loughborough Grammar School by 26-14, maintaining that brilliant unbeaten season.

Kirkham Grammar School also extended their unbeaten season, beating AKS Arnold 53-0. It was a different story at King’s Macclesfield where there was a real battle. King’s just edged it though, beating Denstone College 11-8.

Pate’s Grammar School bagged a 5th win in a row with a 27-5 win over Bristol Grammar School and RGS High Wycombe saw off Campion 31-15.

Worksop College were still on a high after their NatWest Cup win in midweek and it showed, they beat Lawrence Sheriff 77-0. St Joseph’s were also in good nick, giving a few youngsters a run out as they beat Ipswich School 31-17.

All in all a fantastic weekend of rugby, and a great one for so many to finish their seasons and school rugby careers on. For the rest, there is still next week, or even next year. We can’t wait.
