Team of the Term Vote – Season Summary – Millfield

BECOME A PATRON

Our sixth season summary ahead of our Team of the Term vote is Millfield School.

Each day ahead of our announcement of the result of the vote on the 1st January we will be summarising the season of one team on the shortlist each day.

It is perhaps a sign of the quality of this season that despite Millfield’s extraordinary success, they are by no means guaranteed success in this vote.

It has been a truly extraordinary season though, beginning with a stunning 67-7 victory over RGS High Wycombe back at the start of September that had everyone in school circles taking notice.

That was just the beginning though, the first triumph of the season came in late October where, led by captain Bailey Ransom, Millfield claimed the St Joseph’s Festival title, their second title there in three years.

That is arguably the toughest school tournament that there is, however the RFU’s new Schools Champions Trophy emerged as a serious rival for the crown given the quality of teams in that competition.

It is therefore a real sign of Millfield’s quality that they were able to overcome that terrific challenge, and without many top players due to the import rule, and win the final at Allianz Park 31-24 against the excellent Grammar School at Leeds, making it a second title in just over a month.

On their way to victory there were some stunning victories, as well as one pulsating encounter against Tonbridge, where a second half Darren Atkins masterclass, arguably the player of the season, turned a 14-0 deficit into a 16-14 win.

Outside of these competitions Millfield enjoyed big wins over Whitgift, Cowbridge, and Bryanston, but suffered a few more defeats than they would have liked as the weight of fixtures began to pile up. That said, losing to Wellington College and Bromsgrove before half term, and Sedbergh and Monmouth at the end of the term is hardly a travesty, all four are on our Team of the Term shortlist.

It was truly an exceptional term for Millfield, very few sides ever win one trophy in a term of schoolboy rugby, let alone two.
