Team of the Term – Season Summary – Wellington College

Our final season summary ahead of tomorrow’s Fifteen Rugby Fans Team of the Term vote result is Wellington College.

Each day since voting began we have summarised the season of one of the shortlisted teams.

It has been a truly outstanding term for Wellington College, they won twelve of their fourteen games, losing just one, and finished the termas the 2014 Daily Mail Trophy champions.

Not only that, but six of their team were named in the initial England U18s & 17s training squads, Rory Brand, Sam Aspland-Robinson, Matt Williams, Conor Dolan, Tom Parsons, and Jack Ingall, a truly special achievement.

It is no surprise that five of those players come from the Wellington College back division, which has been unrivalled on the school scene this year, such is their talent.

Led by number 8 and all-rounder Will Wilson, Wellington have had some tremendous results this year. Perhaps the best of all was a stunning performance against Millfield at Oxford University’s Iffley Road back in October that saw Wellington win 41-27 against the side that were to go on to win the St Joseph’s Festival and the Champions Trophy, a fine performance.

That was one of six games where Wellington scored more than forty points, including a season high 55-6 on the penultimate weekend of the term against St Paul’s

Wellington’s only defeat of the season came in what was surely the most brilliant match of the season, against Sedbergh. Played at Broadstreet RFC in Coventry, Wellington just missed out 37-34 to the Cumbrian’s, despite a brilliant second half comeback. Nonetheless, it was a game that showed off the tremendous abilities of both sides.

As if to demonstrate that, just four days later Wellington College beat Epsom College 37-10, Epsom had lost just once in well over a year, making beating them by any margin impressive, let alone so dominantly.

A 13-13 draw with the triple Schools Cup champions Dulwich College was the only other non victory for Wellington, who will look ahead to the 7s season with great confidence given the supremecy of that back division, though do not underestimate those up front, as the saying goes, forwards win games, backs decide by how much, and if Wellington’s season has one pattern, it is of winning games.
