The Marches 7s takes place on Sunday, featuring thirty-two teams in one of the biggest tournaments of the season.
The Marches 7s is one of the first big, in terms of numbers, tournaments of the school 7s season, and as such will be a vital indicator of form ahead of the forthcoming HSBC Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s.
The teams are split into eight groups of four, with the top qualifier going through to the Cup, second place to the Plate, and third to the Bowl.
Among those competing are last year’s pace-setters, the dominant Millfield 1st VII. Already this season they have picked up two titles, as well as one minor trophy, and they will be looking to add a third on Sunday. They must frist get out of a tough Pool B though, which includes Adams Grammar, Denstone College, and KES Stratford.
King’s Worcester are the last side to have won the competition, last year’s edition had to be cancelled due to the weather, they beat rivals RGS Worcester 52-0 in the 2013 as part of a superb 7s season. They are drawn in Group C, where Worth, Old Swinford Hospital, and Gower College will be their rivals.
Elsewhere Group F looks particularly tough, with AASE heavyweights Hartpury College, and top school side Monmouth battling with Malvern College and Plymouth College, while the likes of Llandovery College, Cheltenham College, Coleg Sir Gar, and Blundell’s may also fancy their chances from their respective groups. Indeed Sir Gar won back to back tournaments in 2011 and 2012.
It bodes to be an excellent day of rugby!
