Sedbergh on song again to lift Durham 7s title

Sedbergh extended their lead in the HMC North East Super 7s Series, winning the Durham 7s at Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park to claim their second victory from two tournaments.

Sedbergh claimed the Bain Cup after they defeated Kirkham Grammar School 19-12 in the final, a repeat of the Amplforth College 7s final, a further demonstration of the quality of these two schools.

That repeat came about after these two had topped their pools, with Bradford Grammar School and Scottish side Merchiston Castle topping the other two. Sedbergh and Kirkham dealt with their respective threats in the semi finals though to set up the final, with Sedbergh showing all of their quality to win it – you can see a video of that final here: Sedbergh v Kirkham Grammar, Durham 7s.

Woodhouse Grove claimed the Plate, beating RGS Newcaslte 22-19, Woodhouse Grove have been Sedbergh’s closest rivals in 7s terms over the past couple of years, with Grove beating Sedbergh is last year’s HSBC Rosslyn Park National School 7s Plate final, while in 2013 Sedbergh beat Woodhouse Grove in the main final of the same competition.

Sedbergh look set to compete strongly again at the nationals this year, where the other two multiple winners of trophies this season, Wellington College and Millfield, also look set to be their most fierce competition.
