Wellington College in a class of their own as they take the Reigate Charity 7s

Wellington College won their third 7s tournament of the season on Sunday, winning the Reigate Grammar School Charity 7s.

It was Wellington’s third tournament victory from three tournaments entered, a stunning achievement and a further example of why they were selected as the Fifteen Rugby School Team of the Month for February.

Wellington conceded just four tries all day, including just one in the group stage and then one per game in the quarter finals, semi finals, and final, in a tournament that saw them pretty much untroubled throughout.

Across the six games that they played over the course of the day, the Shiplake 7s and South Coast 7s Champions scored exactly 200 points, including getting over thirty in all three knockout games.

Their route to the final saw them top a pool containing Culford, Reed’s, and Hurstpierpoint College, who ended up in the Shield final, which they lost to Royal Hospital School.

Wellington then played RGS Guildford in the quarter final, whom they beat 34-5, before a semi final against Pool C table toppers Epsom College, who had beating the Hampton 7s champions John Fisher in their quarter final, just to highlight their quality. Wellington overcame that hurdle confidently though, winning 33-7 to reach the final.

In the final Wellington faced Brighton College, who had topped Group E before two tight knockout contests that saw them edge out Hampton 19-17 in the quarter final before another single try victory in the semi final, against last year’s champions Tonbridge.

In the final though there was little that they could do about Wellington, who won 31-5 to seal what has to be one of the most dominant tournament victories of the season.

Whitgift picked up the Plate, defeating Dulwich College 12-0 in the final – a good showing from Dulwich given their NatWest Cup commitments. The Shield was won by Royal Hospital School, while Portsmouth Grammar School won the Bowl in dominant fashion over Sutton Valence.

None could compare to Wellington College though, and the question that must be asked is can anyone stop them? Millfield and Sedbergh are also both ticking along very nicely but Wellington College are looking mighty at present.
