Top class field all set for Solihull 7s

The Solihull 7s takes place tomorrow, with twenty-four schools gathering at Solihull School for what ought to be a high class day of 7s.

Solihull are in fact also the reigning champions, having beaten Adams Grammar School in last year’s final. That will not happen again this year though as both sides are drawn alongside each other in Group B, along with King Edward VI Stratford, KES Birmingham, Nottingham High School, and Wrekin College.

The format of the competition sees the top side in each Group reach the Cup semi finals, second place the Plate semis, and third place the Bowl, meaning that a repeat of last year’s final is impossible.

A repeat of the Plate final is possible, King’s Worcester, the 2013 champions, beat Malvern College to lift that last year and both are in different Groups this time.

King’s Worcester are in what is surely the most challenging group of all, Group C, which sees some of the top fifteen-a-side teams this year drawn together. They must get past the likes of Warwick, King’s Macclesfield, Bedford Modern, Loughborough Grammar School, and RGS Worcester. If there was a group to watch, this is it.

Malvern College meanwhile are in Group A, where Old Swinford Hospital, Pate’s Grammar, Shrewsbury, Bablake, and King Henry VII Coventry are their rivals.

Over in Group D, the final group, Stowe look likely to be the strong favourites. They are joined by St Peter’s Gloucester, last year’s Bowl winners Ayelsbury Grammar, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar, Solihull 6th form College, and Newcastle-Under-Lyme School.

It all looks set to be a superb day of 7s, with Group C looking like one of the most testing Groups possible.
