Warwick emerge from group of death to claim Solihull 7s title

Warwick lifted the Solihull 7s Cup after coming through a real ‘group of death’ to secure the title.

Group C actually yielded the winners of all three competitions, the Cup, the Plate, and the Bowl, such was the quality and competitiveness of it. Indeed when the likes of King’s Worcester, RGS Worcester, and Loughborough Grammar School end up a fair way off the pace required to exit the group, you know it is an incredibly tough one.

As it turned out Warwick, Bedford Modern, and King’s Macclesfield all finished the group with four wins and one loss to their name, each beating one of the other two and losing to the other, leaving them level on points and requiring points difference to separate them.

That left Warwick at the top of the pile and into the Cup semis, Bedford Modern in second and heading to the Plate semis, and Kings Macclesfield in third and competing in the Bowl semis.

King’s strolled to the Bowl title, beating Group D’s St Peter’s Gloucester 31-14 in the semi final, and Group B’s Adams Grammar school 43-7 in the final to lift their prize.

Bedford Modern were similarly ruthless in their chasing down of the Plate title, beating Group D’s Aylesbury Grammar School 29-7 in the semi final before the beating Group A’s Old Swinford Hospital 24-7 in the Plate final.

Warwick meanwhile headed to the knockout stage of the main competition, where they were joined by the other three group winners, Pate’s Grammar School from Group A, hosts Solihull from Group B, and the ever strong Stowe from Group D.

First up for Warwick were rivals Stowe, having had such a tough group to get their eye in with though, Warwick took a reasonably secure 28-12 victory over the Group D toppers.

Pate’s upset the hosts Solihull in the other semi final, winning 26-14 to set up a Warwick v Pate’s Grammar School final.

Warwick were in no mood to let such a hard day’s work end without the prize they craved and made short work of Pate’s, winning 31-7 to round off a dominant day for Group C, and a particularly fine day for Warwick, who will look on to the rest of the 7s season with real confidence.
