2015 Surrey 7s Draw & Preview

The Surrey 7s takes place on Wednesday, it is traditionally one of the toughest tournaments to win and this year looks no different.

In the past it has been said that it is an even truer test than the HSBC Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s, however with the recent move to pull teams from the Festival to the Open in that competition, the argument has died down.

Nevertheless, it is just about as tough as it gets and will likely prove to be the most telling sign yet as to what to expect at Rosslyn Park next week.

Millfield and Wellington College have been two of the tournaments most successful sides, Millfield picked up last year’s trophy with a 40-7 final win over St Joseph’s College as they carried their unbeaten 7s season through to Rosslyn Park, which they also won.

Back in 2013 Wellington College reached the final, just losing out to Oaklands College, 19-14 in extra time, but they backed it up by winning the Rosslyn Park Festival a week later.

This year Wellington College are the hot favourites having won every competition available to them and often in a thoroughly dominant manner.

They are in Group I alongside St Benedict’s, Hurstpeirpoint College, and Wallington County Gramar. There are twelve groups in all, with the winners of each group heading to the last 16 of the Cup competition, along with the four best placed second placed sides.

The Plate competition is an all Surrey affair between the top eight remaining Surrey based Schools. Last season Whitgift saw off Hampton in the final to seal that one.

There is an AASE presence in the competition too, Oaklands College and Henley College both participate, they will likely be strong contenders in the competition, though Group K could prove tricky for Henley College, Trinity are sure to be a very tough nut to crack. Oaklands are in Group F, with Cranleigh, London Oratory, and St John’s Leatherhead for company.

Like Wellington, Millfield have enjoyed plenty of success this 7s season, and they will be among the favourites to take the trophy should they or someone else be able to stop the Wellington College rampage. Millfield are drawn in Group D and they will be confident of progress against RGS Guildford, Shiplake, and Richmond Upon Thames College.

Coleg Sir Gar beat Milfield in last week’s Llandovery College 7s final though, putting them firmly in the mix on Wednesday, they are in Group B with Bishop Wodrsworth’s, Reigate GS, and Skinners’ for company.

Last year John Fisher were in great 7s form, reaching the Rosslyn Park final and then beating Millfield in a repeat of the final at Twickenham, they are in Group G. Epsom College have looked good this 7s season and are in a competitive Group A.

Hampton could pose a threat, but Group C looks competitive, look out for Felsted there if fly half Max Malins is able to play. Group E with Brighton College, Emanuel, Harrow, and Reed’s looks competitive, look out for Harrow who won the Middlesex 7s recently.

The headlines in Group H are likely to be St Joseph’s College and Dulwich College’s, however as Dulwich have a NatWest Cup final to prepare for next week, do not expect too much from them on Wednesday.

Group J includes schoolboy heavyweights Bryanston and the most famous school of all, Eton College, meanwhile Whitgift, perennial 7s winners, sit in Group L.

It is sure to be a great day of 7s rugby, the question is, can Wellington College’s tremendous run be halted?
