March School Team of the Month

The Fifteen Rugby School Team of the Month will come as no surprise to most people given their stunning performances and results over the course of the month.

They have won four sevens tournaments this month, the Oakham 7s, the Reigate Charity 7s, the Surrey 7s, and of course the big one, the HSBC Rosslyn Park National School 7s, and they have done so without losing a single game along the way, it has been sensational.

The team we refer to is of course Wellington College, the Fifteen Rugby School Team of the Month for March.

They have, quite simply, been almost unplayable. Their rugby has been sublime, with beautifully crafted attacking and patient 7s being mixed with watertight and high pressure defence. Not only that but the sheer quality of their players is astonishing. Sam Aspland-Robinson is away with England U18 currently, while Rory Brand and Connor Dolan have also represented the U18 side, the likes of Will Brinkley, Matt Williams, Will Wilson, and Tom Parton have been utterly excellent, but truly, the list really could go on.

Special mention to their coaching staff, led by Director of Rugby Kevin Brennan, who have shaped that talent into a cohesive unit, something that they have done time and time again through the years.

Of course Wellington College have not been the only team to impress this month though. Bromsgrove won the U18 NatWest Schools Cup, beating Dulwich College 30-18 in the final and in the process denying Dulwich a fourth straight title in that competition.

Bromsgrove were outstanding in that final, and their semi final against Oundle was one of the games of the competition, such was the intensity and physicality of it. In another month Bromsgrove would certainly have been named as the team of the month, nevertheless they deserve enormous credit for the sheer scale of their achievement on their return to the competition, as well as for the quality of their play.

Over in the U15s QEGS Wakefield deserve huge credit. In their eighth Twickenham final, their third in a row against Warwick, they finally claimed a title all to themselves.

Back to the 7s, mention should go to Reigate Grammar School in the U16s. They have collected trophies rapidly and were truly outstanding at Rosslyn Park, dominating sides right up until a thrilling final against Eton College, where they secured the title in extra time.

If thrilling matches are your thing then there was perhaps none more thrilling this month than Wellington College v Millfield in the HSBC Rosslyn Park National School 7s, which Wellington won 31-29.

Wellington and Millfield were perhaps the two top teams of the 7s season. At Surrey they met at in the final, with Wellington running out as narrow 17-12 winners, then there was that sensational semi final at Rosslyn Park.

Wellington won both of those games though and both titles, and along the way through both tournaments and elsewhere they played 7s of the highest order.

A more straightforward team of the month choice there has rarely been.

Congratulations to Wellington College, our March 2015 Team of the Month.
