Superb England U16 secure big win against Wales

England U16 produced a magnificent performance in Caerphilly yesterday against Wales, securing a 34-0 victory in the process.

Tries from Reading’s Ben Loader, Merchant Taylor’s Sam Moore, Brighton College’s Marcus Smith, River School’s Ted Hill, Warwick’s Nick David, and Stowe’s Tosin Segun, whose brother recently played for England U19, secured the win for England, alongside two conversions from Millfield’s Cameron Brown.

Both teams were selected following the BMW Wellington International Festival, with England selecting from their four Regional Divisional sides at Wellington, North, Midlands, South West, and London & South East, while Wales selected from their two sides who competing at the Festival, the Druids and the Celts.

It was England whose future stars came out on top though, with England U16 Head Coach Steve Shorthand being moved to comment on how pleased he was, saying:

“The Welsh were very strong, so the score line probably isn’t reflective of the full 80 minutes. Up until half-time, they were on the front foot but we really stepped things up in the second half and pulled away in the final twenty.”

“It was a real team effort with the forwards and backs combining in open play, and scoring some fantastic tries. The decisions between those who had a starting spot and those on the bench were very marginal, so we saw a real impact with players coming on. We powered on even more with their contribution.”

“The players have developed in so many facets over the past few months and have been outstanding. Today is a great reward for all their efforts. It was the last weekend of this programme and I wanted them to really focus on those marginal gains that make them better players, and continue to build on their self-belief and confidence. I’m incredibly pleased with what I saw today.”
