AASE Round 2 Review – Hartpury & St Paul’s straight back into winning ways

BECOME A PATRON

Week two of the 2015/16 AASE League yesterday saw Hartpury College, Oaklands College, and St Paul’s Catholic College all enter the fray.

The three were among the top performers last season, indeed Hartpury College have won the title for six years in a row, so their arrival this year was hotly anticipated.

Hartpury certainly did not disappoint, picking up exactly where they left off – dominant. They beat Worcester 6th form College by an impressive 48-5 to pick up the bonus point and start the season in perfect style.

Perhaps Hartpury will face sterner competition in the North this year though with the arrival of Leicester Tigers affiliate side, Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I College.

They won their opening game last week and picked up a second win from their second ever AASE fixture by beating Myerscough College 29-21 at home.

That victory puts them at the top of the pile with a maximum ten points from two games, a fine start indeed.

It was not quite such good news for Oaklands on their return though, the long trip from St Albans up to Kingston Park did them no favours as they lost to a last minute Gosforth Academy kick, giving the hosts a 17-14 victory.

Over in the Southern Conference, it was much like Hartpury’s start for last season’s Southern table toppers St Paul’s Catholic College, they flew out of the block to beat Ivybridge 42-13, securing the try bonus and a mximum five points.

Last year’s newcomers, Bicton College, picked up their first win of the year, and an impressive one it was too. They beat Truro, one of the top performers last year, 17-10 to leave things looking tight early on in the South.

This year’s newcomers in the South are Bath affiliates Beechen Cliff. The new boys looked in with a shout of picking up a win in their first AASE home game but Filton College hit back to take a 35-20 win in the end, their second of the season, sending them to the top of the Southern Conference.

Next week should see some interesting battles, with Wyggeton v Oaklands and Filton v St Paul’s likely to attract plenty of attention.
