This year’s AASE competition looks like it is going to be incredibly tight in the South once again, and perhaps, just perhaps in the North there may be a challenger for Hartpury.

Of course we are only three rounds in and much can and will change, but Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College have made a fantastic start to their first ever AASE season. The Leicester Tigers affiliates have won three from three, including an impressive 13-6 victory over Oaklands College yesterday, with Mike Umaga particularly impressive.

Hartpury, almost inevitably, were also winning – and winning big. They beat Myerscought 48-7 to secure yet another try bonus. The final game in the Northern Division saw another excellent win for Gosforth Academy, who beat Moulton College  17-10, to keep them within five points of the top.

In the South, all eyes were on Filton v St Paul’s, a huge clash that was important last year and felt equally important this.

St Paul’s won it, securing a 12-8 win on Filton turf. The win did not put them top though, Truro’s 22-5 victory over new boys Beechen Cliff kept them on top, level with Filton, whose losing bonus keeps them up high, on ten points.

St Paul’s lie in third, tied on nine points with Bicton College, meaning just a point separates the top four. Bicton stay in such close contention after an impressive 20-0 away win at Henley College.
