Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup – Yet another outstanding weekend

International rugby was the real headline grabber this weekend, but skipping beneath the national radar we had yet another outstanding weekend of schools rugby.

There was a real mix of big wins, tight victories, and even a couple of draws as this extraordinarily competitive season carried on.

Daily Mail Trophy Prediction Competition

One of the most widely anticipated games was Bromsgrove v Oundle, a repeat of last year’s NatWest Cup semi final. That game was one of the most intense and physical of the season. Bromsgrove won it and then went on to lift the trophy, so Oundle were looking for payback this time. However Bromsgrove were not in the mood to slip and won 18-13, keeping their fantastic start to the season alive.

Bromsgrove’s opponents in that final were Dulwich College, who were in action away at Harrow on Saturday. Dulwich’s season has included a victory against Wellington so they headed over in great from. Harrow too are in excellent form though and they showed that again as the edged to a 17-15 victory.

QEGS Wakefield have enjoyed a good start to the year too, their side is made up of two sets of U15 NatWest Cup finalists, which always bodes well for the 1st XV season. They carried that on in fine style with a 30-10 victory over King’s Macclesfield on Saturday.

One of the games of the day was St John’s Leatherhead v Brighton College, which ended in a 23-22 victory for the away side in a fixture between two side who have been playing excellent rugby so far this year.

Wellington College made it three wins from four for the season so far as they convincingly beat Whitgift 30-16. With Millfield to come on Saturday though, the fixture list is not going to let us any time soon for the Daily Mail Trophy champions, you sense that that is just how they like it though.

Previewed Fixtures

Our other previewed games were no less exciting, with perhaps the most exciting of the day being a 19-19 draw between Bradford Grammar School and Stonyhurst College, two sides who have really impressed so far this season.

John Fisher had one of the results of the day with a very strong 29-17 home victory over RGS High Wycombe. Sedbergh meanwhile carried on their dominant start with a huge 49-17 win away at Merchiston Castle in Scotland.

Millfield faced Bryanston for the second time in a fortnight. Millfield won the first encounter by a narrow margin but raced away for victory this time, securing a 34-0 win ahead of their midweek Champions Trophy game against Dulwich.

Warwick meanwhile showed that they are well and truly back in form as they beat New Zealand touring side Massey High School 25-11.

Elsewhere

The biggest result of the day saw Kirkham Grammar School rack up an incredible 89 points away at St Ambrose College, whilst Bedford Modern were not far short of the total as they beat QE Barnet 76-0. Campion brilliant start also continued, they beat Ravens Wood 48-0.

Those were just some of the stunning results from around the country on what was truly a superb weekend of school rugby.
