Despite losing 15-12 at Henley College, Filton College managed to secure third place in the AASE South Division.
That secures them a place at finals day as this was the final round of play in this stage of the AASE league. The leagues now split into a league for the top three and another for the bottom four in each of the respective divisions. They will all play each other once ahead of finals day on the 2nd December, where the 1st placed side in each division will play for the Cup, and so on.
Already secure at the top in the South were St Paul’s, but they made sure of it even so with a 20-13 away win at bottom of the table Beechen Cliff. What that result did do though was give Beechen Cliff their first bonus point of the season.
Bicton College were also securely qualified but they cemented their second place in the table with a 19-7 win over Ivybridge, who finish 6th. It actually all ended rather tight between fourth and sixth, with Henley in 4th after their win over Filton, tied with Truro in 5th on thirteen points, and Ivybridge just a point behind them both.
In the Northern division, a bonus point win for Myerscough was going to be enough for them to be able to secure their third place in the division, and they did just that with a 29-20 victory away at Moulton College, who currently sit at the foot of the table.
Had Myerscough lost then the winner of Gosforth Academy v Worcester 6th form College had a chance of finishing third. Gosforth won that game 24-17, and had Myerscough lost, that would indeed have been enough. However it was ultimately to be a fourth place finish for them.
The top two in the table were already know, Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth College and Hartpury College. However with them playing each other, bragging rights were up for grabs, as well as the comforting thought of sitting at the top of the table come the split.
Both were unbeaten, but Hartpury showed all of the class that has seen them dominate this competition right from the day it was introduced, beating Wyggeston 47-17, at Wyggeston, a result that suggest they will be the likely table toppers again after the split.
The North split will therefore see Hartpury, Wyggeston, and Myerscough competing for which final, Cup, Plate, or Bowl, that they will play in on finals day, while in the South it will be St Paul’s, Bicton, and Filton.
