Schools Rugby Midweek Preview – NatWest Cup is back & dominates fixture list

This week sees the return of a full block of NatWest Cup and Vase fixtures, several regular season games, and of course the two Champions Trophy semi finals.

You can see our Champions Trophy semi finals preview by following the link, but the rest of the week’s action is previewed here.

Monday

On Monday the NatWest Vase tie between Wymondham College and Easton & Otley College ended in a 5-5 draw, putting Easton & Otley through as the away side after an even try count.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, Harrow v Eton College was the big draw, and it ended with a 32-25 victory for the home side in what was a fascinating game of rugby. You can see our report here: Harrow v Eton College.

Elsewhere, the Bishop’s Stortford derby ended in a 10-10 draw, a result that will likely please away side the High School more than the home College side. In the NatWest Cup Leicester Grammar School knocked out Trent College with a 24-8 away victory.

Langley beat Gresham’s and Mount St Mary’s College beat Worksop College in the other two Tuesday NatWest Cup ties.

Wednesday

Wednesday is the day this midweek. It includes both Champions Trophy semi finals, Sedbergh v Bedford and Epsom College v Blundell’s, with Sedbergh v Bedford being live streamed.

There is a second live stream, this one in the NatWest Cup as St Benedict’s v London Oratory is streamed. The winner will have their next game live streamed too as this section is followed right though to the national stages of the competition.

The Cup, naturally, dominates the fixture list. Champions Bromsgrove are at home to King Henry VII Coventry, they will expect to go through and on form are looking like they can challenge for back to back cup wins.

St Joseph’s Festival winners Hampton play in one of the toughest ties of the round as they travel to a very strong Berkhamsted 1st XV, this should be a good game.

Cup greats Colston’s are at home to QEH, while regular challengers Stowe face another in form opponent in Sir Thomas Rich’s, this will be another of the big ties to look out for on Wednesday.

2014 finalists, and 2013 and 2014 U15 winners, Warwick, host Hereford Cathedral School, while 2013 Daily Mail Trophy Champions Woodhouse Grove are hosting Giggleswick in another bumper tie.

Thursday

There are just two fixtures on Friday. In the NatWest Vase Duke of York’s Royal Military School host St Lawrence College.

The big fixture of the day though sees Durham host Yarm, Durham are currently riding high in the Daily Mail Trophy table, while Yarm played in a thriller against Woodhouse Grove on Saturday, eventually losing by just a point at 32-31.

Friday

The midweek rugby ends on a quiet note with just the one fixture taking place, it should be a good one though as St Olave’s Grammar host Langley Park.
