Schools Rugby Midweek Preview & Predictions – Schoolboy classics take centre stage

This week’s midweek school rugby sees some great fixtures throughout the week.

There are a few NatWest Cup and NatWest Vase catch up fixtures, but this week seems very much to be about some of the big regularly scheduled fixtures between some very big names.

Tuesday

Tuesday was one of the quieter days, Malvern College v Monmouth had to be abandoned early on after a serious injury, while in the NatWest Vase The Leys enjoyed a strong win against Wooton Upper.

Wednesday

On Wednesday the NatWest competition saw a lot of action, with the Vase in particular having a busy day.

In the NatWest Cup, 2010 and 2011 Champions Whitgift travelled to Harris City Academy and enjoyed a good forty point win. King’s Worcester were if anything even stronger against Adams Grammar, winning 46-0.

2014 semi finalists Oundle beat Nottingham High School 34-5, while Wycliffe College beat Farmor’s, and  Portsmouth Grammar won 53-0 against Hampshire Collegiate.

The pick of the bunch though was Harrow v Reigate Grammar. Harrow have been outstanding on a tough circuit, while Reigate have been truly exceptional, but on an easier one. It made for a fascinating game, which Reigate outstandingly won 25-18. You can see our report of that game here: Harrow v Reigate GS

Elsewhere The Oratory won an excellent local derby against Pangbourne College, winning 8-3 in tough conditions. Caterham v Wimbledon College was another close one, but Caterham just edged it, 10-9.

You can see the full list of results below.

Thursday

Thursday is a monstrous day of top level non-cup schools rugby fixtures. It almost feels like an old fashioned type of midweek fixture list.

One of the biggest games of the day will be Wellington College’s trip to Cranleigh, two of the best teams in the country going head to head in what is always an outstanding game of rugby. This is not to be missed.

There are other classics too though, such as Eton College’s trip to Radley College and Marlborough College’s trip to St Edward’s Oxford. It is almost a shame that they are all on the same day.

Ampleforth College host Giggleswick for what shout be a good close game, so too should King’s Bruton v Prior Park.

St Joseph’s College are in action at home to Framlingham College, with Brighton College at home to Bede’s. Dean Close welcome the Crypt, with the day rounded off by Sutton Valence v Emanuel.

Friday

There are a couple of cracking games under the lights on Friday evening. Trinity v St Benedict’s is going to be a huge game of rugby, while Shiplake College’s game against Merchant Taylors will not be far off either. If you are in the area there are certainly worse ways to spend a Friday evening!
