Midweek Update – Superb midweek games, and more still to come

It has been a superb midweek of schools rugby so far, and there will be more to come tomorrow with a couple of Friday night games.

There has been NatWest Cup action, Vase action, and some huge Thursday fixtures as many schools take the weekend off for an exeat.

Tuesday

Tuesday was a fairly quiet day, St Joseph’s College picked up an excellent win over Felsted, 12-0, in the NatWest Cup. Meanwhile in the Vase The Leys ran out as strong winners against Wooton Upper. Elsewhere Malvern College v Monmouth unfortunately had to abandoned early on due to a nasty injury.

Wednesday

Wednesday was a mammoth day of schools rugby. In the NatWest Cup Wycliffe College picked up a narrow win, and there were big wins for King’s Worcester, Portsmouth Grammar, and 2010 & 2011 Champions, Whitgift.

Last year’s semi finalists, Oundle, beat Nottingham High School 34-5, but the game of the day was definitely Reigate Grammar School’s 25-18 win at Harrow, a stunning victory. You can see our report of that smash and grab effort here: Harrow v Reigate Grammar.

In the Vase, Bloxham picked up a big win, so too Kennet and Shrewsbury. There were also wins for Cheadle Hulme and Dartford Grammar. The big game of the day there though was Caterham v Wimbledon College, which Caterham just won by the smallest of margins, a 10-9 home win.

Outside of the Cup Christ’s Hospital picked up a good 17-15 win at Tiffin and St Benedict’s renewed their rivalry with Latymer Upper, winning 17-13. Wilsmlow High School, Cokethorpe, Lord Wandsworth College, and Claire’s Court were also in the winning mood. So too were the Oratory who secured an 8-3 derby victory against Pangbourne College in very tricky conditions.

Thursday

Thursday featured plenty of huge names in schools rugby. Perhaps the biggest game of the day was Cranleigh v Wellington College, two of the best around. An inspired performance from Tom Parton, helped Wellington to an 18-8 victory. His tactical kicking was supreme, while his try was a Parton special, as good as you will see.

Eton College secured a stunning 32-0 win away at rivals Radley College, while in another huge game, St Edward’s Oxford beat Marlborough College 25-3.

King’s Bruton picked up a 19-5 win over Prior Park, and Emmanuel secured a 12-0 win at Sutton Valence. Ampleforth College and Giggleswick played out a bit of a classic, with Ampleforth taking a 29-22 victory. Dean Close meanwhile enjoyed an impressive 62-0 win over The Crypt.

Friday

There is still more to come, with Trinity v St Benedict’s and Shiplake College v Merchant Taylors both taking place under the lights on Friday evening.
