South Coast 7s: Draw revealed as holders Wellington College aim for a repeat of 2015 success

BECOME A PATRON

The draw for the South Coast 7s tournament on Sunday 7th February has been made.

The prestigious tournament, hosted by Portsmouth Grammar School, is one of the early highlights of the 7s season, and this year sees an expanded 16 team draw.

The sixteen are drawn into four groups of four, with the winners then entering the Cup knockout, second place the Plate, third the Shield, and fourth the Bowl.

Holders Wellington College, who last year had one of the all-time great 7s seasons, are in a tricky Group 1. They face Peter Symonds’ College, old rivals Epsom College, and a Reigate Grammar School side who won at Rosslyn Park as Colts last year.

Group 2 is barely less tricky, AASE legends Hartpury College are probably the headline act, but they are joined by two schools in Sherborne and Brighton College who possessed lethal backlines in the fifteen-a-side season, and whom one suspects will pose a threat in the shortened format too. Merchant Taylors will be seeking to upset the apple cart too.

Group 3 sees perennial 7s winners Millfeild drawn alongside the hosts, Portsmouth Grammar School, like Wellington last year, in 2014 Millfield had one of the all time great 7s sides. The Oratory and Pangbourne College also sit in Group 3 and will look to push for top finishes.

Group 4 sees a second AASE side, St Paul’s Catholic College, who are one of the contributors to London Irish’s outstanding U18 side. Their opponents are a strong Eastbourne College side, Canford, and KCS Wimbledon, who showed some superb touches during the fifteen-a-side season.

As ever, the South Coast 7s ought to be a superb indicator of form ahead of Rosslyn Park!
