School 7s: Saturday’s Colston’s 7s draw announced

The draw for the prestigious Colston’s 7s tournament has been made.

Taking place on Sunday 31st January, the competition will consist of twenty teams, split into four groups of five. The top side in each group will reach the Cup semi finals, with second place heading to the Plate semis, third the Shield semis, and fourth the Bowl semis.

Holders Sherborne, who beat Kingswood 17-5 in last year’s tournament, have not entered this year, nor have their opponents, while Plate winners Bromsgrove are also absent.

Plate runners up Prior Park College are involved though, but find themselves in a tough group alongside Wlesh side Whitchurch High School, the excellent Seaford College and Bishop Wordsworth’s, and the hosts, Colston’s, in Group B.

Shield winners King’s Bruton are drawn in Group D alongside the team they beat 20-17 in that final, Bristol Grammar School. Denstone College are also in that group but the side that most eyes will likely be trained on will be Kirkham Grammar School, dominant in both 7s and 15s last year, and in fine 15s form again this.

In Group A Colston’s 2nd VII will face Malvern College, Pate’s Grammar Schol, and Wycliffe College, while in Group C AASE side Beechen Cliff will likely be the front runners in a group that includes Christ College, King’s College Taunton, Downside, and Truro School.

It is certainly set to be an extremely tough start to the 7s season!
