Durham 7s: Kirkham Grammar School lay down a marker as 7s season hots up

Kirkham Grammar School showed that their form on the rugby field this year is not just confined to the fifteen-a-side game, as they won the Bain Cup at the Durham 7s.

Kirkham went unbeaten in the fifteen-a-side season, including a big win over Sedbergh, and showed just that sort of form again here in the shortened format of the game, beating their great rivals 17-5 in the semi final.

They followed that with a 12-0 win over Bradford Grammar School in the final, having already beaten them one in a tricky Group B that also included Ampleforth College, King’s Priory, and Yarm.

Their quarter final saw them beat Dundee High School, who had finished second to hosts Durham in Group A, 52-12 before they moved on to that superb semi final win over Sedbergh.

Sedbergh themselves were in good form, preceding that semi final loss with a 42-5 quarter final win over King’s Macclesfield, having topped Group D, a tough group that included AASE side Gosforth Academy.

Bradford Grammar’s route to the final also included a win over Gosforth, 26-17 in the semi final, following a 19-15 win over Durham in the quarter final.

The other Group winners were RGS Newcastle, but they lost to near neighbours Gosforth 46-7 in the quarter final.

The Plate competition saw St Peter’s York, third behind Sedbergh and Gosforth in Group D, lift the silverware after beating Woodhouse Grove, third in Group A, 34-15. It followed a 26-0 semi final win over Ampleforth College and a 40-12 quarter final victory over Birkdale.

The story of the day though was certainly Kirkham Grammar School’s Bain Cup win, setting them up very nicely for the 7s season ahead, and suggesting that they are definitely one of the favourites for some of the big prizes towards the end of the season, if they were not already.
