England U20 will have a new Head Coach for the World Rugby U20 Championships in Manchester this June.

Former England international Martin Haag will replace interim Head Coach Jon Callard once the Greene King IPA Championship season, where Haag is in charge at Nottingham, is over.

Callard stepped into the role on an interim basis after the 2013 and 2014 Junior World Championship Head Coach Ian Peel moved on to work with Saracens and England.

Had has worked with the England age-grade set up before, he was an Assistant Coach for the England u18 tour of Australia in 2007, and was an RFU National Academy Coach when England U20 reached the 2009 Junior World Championship final.

He will work with the newly appointed England U20 backs coach, Rory Teague, while Callard will return to his role as national performance academy manager and international performance coach, working with players who have recently graduated from the U20s and into the Saxons.

Speaking about his appointment, Haag said:

“I’m delighted to be back at the RFU and working with the best young talent in this country, it is an exciting opportunity to be able to help them on their rugby journey and hopefully help them shape their futures along with the other coaches.“

“A lot of good work has been done by those involved in the pathway over the years and I hope that by bringing the experiences I’ve had as a player and coach, I can continue that, mentoring and developing players to be the best they can be.”

Head of international player development Joe Lydon was effusive in his praise of Haag, saying:

“Martin is held in high esteem in the rugby world, we were impressed with his vision for both player and coach development and his philosophies and values align with those that are place for the programme.”

Before the World Championship starts in June, England have two U20 RBS 6 Nations games remaining, against Wales and France, Jon Callard will remain in charge for those two fixtures.
