The LAMBS U16s season finished on a high with a 39 – 0 win over Saracens U15s.
Tries from Banire (The Leys), Kirkbridge (3) (Tettenhall), McCallum (St Columbus) and Medcraft (Trinity College) allowed the LAMBS newest team to finish the season showing what they are capable off whilst playing under the ‘Fast and Free’ philosophy.
Following a central National XV selection the LAMBS U16s suffered loses of 7 – 67 to Yorkshire U17s and 7 – 55 to Worcester Warriors U16s. Both were learning curves for the squad and the management; lessons that came to fruition as the squad hit 5th gear in their 3rd and final game, scoring some sensational tries whilst impressively keeping a clean sheet.
The 3G pitch and the prospect of playing as part of a double header, with the U18s playing immediately afterwards, all added to the spectacle. The previous game against Yorkshire had been a battle of brawn vs. brain, with the much more physical U17 Yorkshire side winning the collisions and the breakdown area. The LAMBS 16s back row knew that Saracens would offer a similar threat, and their speed and accuracy at the breakdown made it easier for the backline to execute some impressive long-range scores.
After a short season the U16s program will look to expand, with invitations for fixtures on next years calendar already arriving. An excellent finish to a tough opening season shows just glimmers of what is to come from this side in the coming years.
National Director Alex Laybourne said:
“The U16s have had a tough season, but today shows what they are all about, and they thoroughly deserved the win. In the previous two games they faced different challenges, but never gave up – and arguably scored the best tries in those two fixtures, committing fully to our philosophy. We hope to expand the 16s season and let the ‘Fast and Free’ philosophy grow and expand further.”
“The boys involved have done themselves, their schools and the pink shirt proud and we look forward to seeing more in the future.”
