Conwy U16 International Festival: Wales RGC & Italy U17 unbeaten heading into final day

Wales RGC picked up their second win from their two games so far at the Conwy U16 International Festival.

Their side, featuring five Rydal Penrhos pupils, including last minute try scorer Adam Sabri, beat Italy U17 ‘A’ 10-5, backing up last weekend’s 22-5 victory over Scotland U16 ‘Blue’.

The only other side with an unbeaten record heading into Saturday’s third and final round of games are Italy U17, who beat Welsh Academicals by an impressive 31-0 margin on Wednesday, following on from a tight 28-24 win over France U16 West last weekend.

It was a much better day for the two French side, East and West, on Wednesday than it was at the weekend. Both had lost to the Italian sides, East lost 17-15 to Italy ‘A’, West, as mentioned, narrowly lost to the top Italian sides. However on Wednesday both sides claimed victory, condemning the Scots to another tough day at the office.
France West beat Scotland Blue 19-0, while France East beat Scotland Red 41-5. Scotland Red face the daunting prospect of Wales RGC on Saturday in their final game, while Scotland Blue face a Wales Academicals side who beat their Red counterparts 29-12 last weekend.

The final fixtures see Italy U17 take on France East, with Italy U17 ‘A’ playing France West in the final game of the week long Festival.

Speaking after Wednesday’s games, Rydal Penrhos’ Director of Sport, Allen Boyd, said:

“It was a very impressive performance and I thought that our pupils acquitted themselves extremely well. The Italians were a very physical side but the RGC rearguard held firm with some exceptional defending, and I thought Adam and Dan were two of the standout performers on show.”

“This experience of playing against international calibre teams’ is going to do wonders for their belief, and hopefully RGC can finish the tournament on a high this weekend.”
