Hampton full back secures England 7s Academy contract

Hampton’s Will Attfield has been signed by the England 7s Academy for the 2016 season.

Attfield, currently sitting his A Levels, progressed to the Academy after facing disappointment as he learned that he would not be given a Senior Academy contract at London irish.

However the full back impressed at the England Academies trials under the watchful eye of England 7s Head Coach, Simon Amor.

Attfield then traveled to the Greene King IPA 7s at Bury St Edmunds RFC as part of the England 7s Development squad, at which he clearly impressed Amor:

“Will is clearly a very talented and exciting young rugby player with lots of potential and I hope that he will develop into a world-class sevens competitor.  He reads the game well, has a great skills set and is good all-round player – ideal for the Sevens game.”

For Attfield it was a dream come true once Amor delivered the good news:

“Simon came up to me after the tournament to ask if I would be interested in joining the England Sevens squad – I was speechless and very emotional because this has always been my dream.  My mum and dad were watching from a distance and I didn’t even need to tell them the good news – they could see it written all over my face.”

The achievement is a success not just for Attfield though, but also for the school, who have impressed many people in recent years on the rugby field and have produced a number of top players, including Wasps’ Alex Lundberg.

This year they lifted the prestigious St Joseph’s Festival title, and Attfield was a key part of the side’s success all season, with Hampton’s Director of Rugby, Sean Thomson, saying:

“This is a fantastic and well-deserved opportunity for Will after a brilliant season in both the fifteen and seven-a-side formats of the game. He was critical to Hampton’s successes this season and we wish him all the best in his professional rugby career.  Will’s achievement helps to reflect the level of talent that we currently have at the school, but more importantly it will show our younger boys what they can hope to achieve if they work as hard as Will.”
