AASE League: Round 5 sees big guns secure top 4 finishes

Oaklands consolidated their position at the top of the Northern Conference in an exciting day in the AASE League.

Round 5 was always going to be a key day as teams tried to secure their top four places ahead of the league split after half term. Each conference will divide in two, the top four from each respective division playing each other again, the same with the bottom four, before the winners of each division meet in the final, second place meet second, and so on.

North

Oaklands secured their place in that top half split in the North after a brilliant 20-12 win over their nearest challengers, Worcester 6th form College. It puts them eight clear of Worcester, but more importantly they are fifteen clear of Moulton in fifth, with Moulton having two to play.

Moulton themselves picked up a first win of the season today, beating Bishop Burton College 39-10, leaving the AASE newcomers still searching for a win, and putting Moulton just a point behind Myerscough in the hunt for fourth place.

Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I College are just a point further behind, but were beaten today by Gosforth Academy, 43-14, and the Newcastle Falcons AASE side are looking highly likely to make that top four cut with ease.

South

A team extra in the South means a round extra for the southern conference, but that has not stopped Hartpury College from wrapping up a top four stop after a very tight 24-20 victory over SGS Filton College kept them at the top of the table on 23 points, five clear of Beechen Cliff in second, and crucially fifteen ahead of Truro in fifth.

Beechen Cliff jumped from third to second after they leapfrogged Exeter College on Wednesday afternoon, winning 21-13 to all but secure their place in the top four, they need just a single point from two games to do so.

Henley College are also looking odds on to stay in the top four, they are in fourth, eight points clear of Truro, after a stunning 57-12 victory over St Paul’s Catholic College.

St Paul’s now sit at the bottom of the conference after Ivybridge Community College picked up their first victory of the season in a stunning game against Truro College that produced a thrill a minute, ending 29-27 to Ivybridge.
