Schools Rugby Midweek Update

BECOME A PATRON

A quieter midweek than last, perhaps, but it has only been quiet in terms of quantity so far, not quality.

Tuesday and Wednesday both saw plenty of exciting fixtures, while Thursday and Friday both look set to be fascinating.

Tuesday

Tuesday was a huge day in the NatWest Cup. Durham secured their place in the second round with a thumping 55-0 win over Yarm in North B (you can see highlights here: Durham v Yarm). They will now face Schools Cup legends, Barnard Castle, with the winner facing Durham’s big rivals, RGS Newcastle, who are already into the third round after a win on Wednesday.

Felsted also qualified for the second round after the beat Brentwood 34-13. It was a spirited display from Brentwood, but ultimately Felsted had too much to spare and will now face St Joseph’s College in the London & South East A second round.

Outside of the Cup there was a huge Daily Mail Trophy fixture in South West London as Epsom College and Hampton met. The two played out and exciting and close fixture, with Epsom College running out as 19-10 winners.

Wednesday

Wednesday was another big day in the NatWest Cup, RGS Newcastle became the first side to qualify for the third round after the put in a huge performance to beat Dame Allan’s 51-10. The will face the winners of Durham v Barnard Castle in North B.

There was also a game in South West B as Weston College faced the most successful side in Schools Cup history, Colston’s. Weston were not phased by such history though, and secured a superb 24-19 victory, setting up a second round game against Richard Huish.

The third NatWest Cup fixture was Trinity meet Tiffin in London & South East B. The game was a real thriller, with 72 points scored in total. Trinity secured the lions’ share though, winning 42-30 to seal their place in the second round, where they will face a huge local derby at home to John Fisher.

There was also a game in the Vase as Bishop Heber beat Hilbre, 53-7. Meanwhile outside of the Cups, Exeter School were impressive against Torquay Boys, while Hayes carried on their stunning form, beating Darrick Wood 82-17.

Bloxham were also on fire, beating King Edward VI, Five Ways, by 50-0. It was closer between London Oratory and UCS, with UCS winning 17-5, while the Crypt were also continuing their good form with a 34-14 win over Marling.

There was a great game in Gloucestershire as Cokethorpe took an excellent 24-20 win over Pate’s Grammar School, while over at Princethorpe College, Lawrence Sherrif were running rampant with a 50-0 win. Emanuel meanwhile beat Royal Alexandra & Albert 26-12.

Moving North, there was an excellent win for Sandbach, who beat NatWest Vase finlaists St Ambrose College 22-10.

There was also a huge fixture at Allianz Park as Merchant Taylors’ met Mill Hill for their annual derby. It went in the favour of Merchant Taylors’ this year, as they secured a 34-10 victory.

Thursday

There was a big NatWest Cup second round game on Thursday as RGS High Wycombe travelled just down the road in South West B to Aylesbury Grammar School. RGS reached the second round by beating Magdalen College, and charged into the third round with a strong 22-5 victory over their near neighbours.

There was a huge Daily Mail Trophy game between RGS Worcester and Malvern College, a game that we expected to be a good and close encounter, and so it proved as Malvern just edged out RGS, 17-14.

Friday

Friday is all about the two big evening kick offs as Caterham face Colfe’s and Woodhouse Grove host their big local rivals, Bradford Grammar School. Both should be excellent matches, with Woodhouse Grove in particular looking like a real force this season.

There is also action a little earlier as Wallington County Grammar host Langley Park and Windsor Boys host Latymer.
