Report: Haileybury on song against Hertfordshire rivals St Albans

Haileybury secured a great win in the big Hertfordshire schools derby, making it 4 wins in a row against St Albans and a fifth victory in five games this season.

George Howe was superb in a man of the match display and he was closely followed by his back row colleague Duncan Henderson.

A tight first half ended with the scores level at 7-7, Henderson scoring the try and Dawes the conversion.

The hard work of the first half helped to grind St Albans down resulting in the home team dominating and running out as deserved winners.

Captain Bryn McCall finished off a fine team move to make it 14-7. From there Spencer Owen scored a sensational try from fully 70 metres. Xavier Garnham was prominent on the wing and crossed for two tries, the second of which was a wonderful team try with multiple phases and some superb offloads.

Duncan Henderson put in a phenomenal amount of work during the game and crossed for his second try of the match to help his side move further ahead. The icing on the cake was Harry Collins try which was created superbly by that man Owen with a superb run on the right wing followed by a cross field kick that was reminiscent of the great French try by Phillipe Saint-Andre against England in the early 90’s.

Conversions were from the classy Dawes (3) and the hard-working Stibbs. This was a very satisfying result for Haileybury, who will be feeling confident now as they head into a huge encounter at Allianz Park on Wednesday night against Harrow, one of the form teams in the country and the Daily Mail Trophy leaders.
